Hokies fall 4-3 at #2 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men's tennis team (0-1) narrowly missed out on a big win against No. 2 North Carolina (3-0) on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3.

The doubles action was intense, as senior Alex Ribeiro and sophomore Jordan Chrysostom earned a huge result against the No. 6 duo of William Blumberg and Brian Cernoch, 7-6(2).

Seniors Carlo Donato and Ryan Kros went down to the wire in the last doubles match, ultimately falling 7-6(5).

The Tar Heels had success in the first several singles matches, but the Hokies made a late push.

Freshman Hugo Maia earned a point after winning his first set before his opponent, No. 100 Josh Peck, was forced to retire in the second set.

Sophomore Matthis Ross made a name for himself on Court 2, where he downed No. 41 Benjamin Sougouin, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(7).

Freshman Alvaro Saez-Royuela Ariza earned a win in his dual debut on Court 6 with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0(9) result against Logan Zapp.

The Hokies late rally fell short, but had many bright spots that will ignite the team moving forward.

Tech will face ODU on Tuesday at 1:30 pm inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
