Hokies sweep quad meet, improve to 4-0


MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Virginia Tech wrestling won all three bouts Sunday at a quad meet vs. Ohio, Kent St. and West Virginia to improve to 4-0 on the 2020-21 season. The eighth-ranked Hokies lost just eight of the 30 matches Sunday afternoon and recorded 13 bonus-point victories.
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • No. 18 Sam Latona was the only Hokie to go 3-0 Sunday afternoon. After winning his first match via forfeit, Latona won his second match in a 10-2 major decision before taking down No. 12 Killian Cardinale 3-2 in the only ranked matchup of the day.
  • The Hokies recorded three wins by fall in team-scored matches, including Sam Hillegas' second pin of the season after winning his first collegiate match via fall last week vs. Campbell. Bryce Andonian and Collin Gerardi also won by fall.
  • In Tech's 32-9 win over Kent St., the Hokies won seven matches, six of which were bonus-point wins. No. 1 and 2 in the country, Mekhi Lewis and Hunter Bolen, respectively, each secured technical falls in the win over the Golden Flashes.
  • Seven Hokies made their dual debuts Sunday in Morgantown: Hunter Catka, Sam Fisher, Jordan Florence, Jake Hart, Clayton Ulrey, Nathan Warden and Brandon Wittenberg. Ulrey and Connor Brady also got their first career wins at 157 pounds, both earning bonus points.
  • Collin Gerardi wrestled for the first time this season after missing the Campbell dual last week, recording a pin in the dual with Ohio in 5:37.
