Virginia Tech men's golfer Mark Lawrence Jr., won the 2020 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The three-day tournament, which features a field of both amateurs and professionals, was played at the par 72, 6,946 -yard Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke, Virginia.
Lawrence, who graduated in May, led after all three rounds to claim his first State Open title, an event in which he had twice been runner-up. He defeated Justin Young by seven strokes and former Tech golfer Mikey Moyers by eight strokes. Lawrence lost in play-off for the championship last year with Jack Montague.
On Saturday, Lawrence, a Richmond native and the Hokies' career leader in scoring average, carded a 3-under 69 to finish 63-68-69=200. For the week, he had 18 birdies and just two bogeys in the stroke play. He did not record a bogey on the back nine during the tournament. Lawrence posted all three rounds in the 60s, including a 9-under 63 in Thursday's opening round. The three-round total of 200 breaks the tournament record for lowest 54-hole total by four strokes.
Moyers, who played for the Hokies from 2009-13 and is currently seventh in career scoring, also posted a final round 68 on Saturday to finish 69-71-68=208 and in sole possession of third place. A former professional, Moyers has recently regained his amateur status.
Drew Brockwell, a rising junior from Chesterfield, Virginia, tied for 20th overall at 214 and Connor Burgess, a rising senior from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 29th overall at 217. Garland Green, who played at Tech from 2007-11, tied for 40th place and Cameron Moore, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, competed in the event, but did not make the cut to play on Saturday. Green is the brother of Hokies' head women's golf coach Carol Robertson.
