The Virginia Tech Athletics Department supports three spirit programs – a large co-ed cheer team, a dance team (HighTechs), and the HokieBird.
The programs are run by a head spirit coach, assistant coaches and volunteer assistant coaches. They are supported by a number of athletic department resources, including academic support services (SAASS), strength & conditioning, sports medicine, sports nutrition, and sports psychology.
In a given year, there are between 65 – 75 student-athletes across all three spirit programs.
The cheerleaders and HighTechs are some of the most active and visible groups on campus – performing at athletic events, competing in UCA and UDA nationals competitions, supporting their student-athlete peers at events, participating in campus events, and more.
Their first priority is promoting Virginia Tech Intercollegiate Athletics and the university as a whole. The young men and women work together to generate spirit and crowd involvement at Virginia Tech.

Tryouts for both teams are typically held in late Spring, with dates and details varying slightly each year. Members of the cheer and dance teams must be enrolled full-time as a Virginia Tech student. Book money is awarded each semester to qualifying members of the cheer/dance team (years on team, academic standing, etc).
