Hokies set to open 2020-21 in-conference competition

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to have their first in-conference competition on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Duke.

Diving will begin at 11 a.m. with swimming following at 2:30 p.m. " It's very exciting to be able to compete against another team," head coach Sergio Lopez Miro said. "I think our team is ready to race Duke, they are a very good Men's and Women's Team. We are looking forward to seeing how our Hokies react to our first real challenge since last February."

IN THE RANKINGS 

The tech men enter the weekend ranked 19th and the women enter ranked 23rd according to the latest CSCAA TYR Top-25 poll. The Duke women are currently ranked 21st.

HOKIE MEN

  • Nine NCAA qualifiers return for the Hokies: Thomas Hallock, Antani Ivanov, Blake Manoff, AJ Pouch, Sam Tornqvist, Noah Zawadzki, Henry Claesson, Lane Stone and Filippo Dal Maso.
  • Eight CSCAA All-American recipients return as well; Thomas Hallock (50 free), Antani Ivanov (200 fly), Blake Manoff (100 fly), AJ Pouch (200 breast), Sam Tornqvist (200 back) and Noah Zawadzki (1M, 3M and platform), Filippo Dal Maso (800 free relay) and Lane Stone (800 Free Relay).
  • Junior Blake Manoff returns for the Hokies –
    • Manoff holds the program record in the 100 free, 100 fly, 200 fly and holds top-5 times for the 50 free and 200 free. 
  • Senior Thomas Hallock returns for his final season – 
    • Hallock holds the program record in the 50 free and as a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay.


HOKIE WOMEN 

  • Tech women are a young, talented group 

    • The 2020 women's recruiting class was ranked 13th nationally.
    • Among the freshmen, there are four athletes who have already qualified for the Olympic trials.
    • The current times from the freshman would have scored 172 individual points at last season's ACCChampionships.
  • Senior Joelle Vereb returns for the Hokies –
    • Vereb holds program top-5 times in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 fly and 200 IM. 
  • Senior Reka Gygroy returns after taking an Olympic redshirt last season 
    • Gygory holds program top-5 times in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 backstroke. 
  • Three NCAA qualifiers and CSCAA All-American recipients return; Teagan Moravek (1M and 3M), Joelle Vereb (50 free and 100 fly) and Regan Westwood (1M)


UP NEXT: The Hokie women are set to host Marshall on Friday Nov. 20 at 4:30 p.m. The Men will have an intrasquad meet on Saturday Nov. 21 at 11 a.m.
