WHAT WE'RE WATCHING FOR
Can the Hokies find more production from their bench?

In Wednesday's season opener, Tech had no problems filling it up, scoring 85 points and shooting nearly 50% from the field. Each of Tech's starters were in double figures led by point guard Georgia Amoore's 19 and Asiah Jones' 17. Those five accounted for 77 of the team's 85 points on the afternoon, a trend Coach Brooks acknowledged could be a concern, although the season has just begun.

The other seven Hokies to touch the floor combined for eight points on 4 for 13 shooting, and three of those made baskets belonged to center Alex Obouh Fegue.

For comparison, in 2019-20, Tech's bench accounted for 19.8 points per game or about 28.2% of the team's production. Wednesday, the second unit produced 9.4% of Tech's scoring.

Will the frontcourt produce at the same rate as it did in game one?

The combo of Elizabeth Kitley and Asiah Jones combined for 32 points and 22 rebounds against Richmond. Throw in Obouh Fegue and that's 38 points from the frontcourt that also controlled the boards.

Kitley in particular may have to adjust her game as she becomes the focal point of the opposition's defense. She found herself in several double team situations in the post and turned the ball over four times against the Spiders.

Will the backcourt produce at the same rate as it did in game one?

The starting backcourt certainly impressed Wednesday, especially Amoore who dropped 19 points in her collegiate debut and the first competitive game for the Aussie in over a year. Aisha Sheppard got things going with 15 first half points coming from five triples, and Cayla King finished with 11, a career-best.

All told, that group accounted for 45 points and despite the challenges of preparing for the season and the fact that it was their first time on the floor together, they looked like a dangerous unit that can cause the opposition a variety of problems.

Off the bench, Da'Ja Green in her Virginia Tech debut, scored two points in 15 minutes and the Hokies will look to get Chloe Brooks more involved as well as G/F Taylor Geiman who was 0 for 3 from the field in her first game after season ending ACL surgery in January.

•A 57TH consecutive win at Cassell for the program

The Hokeis haven't lost a home non-conference game since December 4, 2014, a streak of 56 consecutive games. In Coach Brooks' tenure, he is 40-0 and his Hokies own an average margin of victory of 24.85 and have 13 wins of 30 or more points.
