BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech men's golf head coach Brian Sharp has announced that David Stanford has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Virginia Tech and play for the Hokies in Fall 2021.
Stanford, from Vienna, Virginia, is the third-ranked golfer in Virginia and 88th ranked player overall in the Class of 2021, according to National Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings. He is an honor student at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Also, Stanford won the 2019 VHSL Northern Region and Northern District championships at Marshall.
The 2019 Virginia State Golf Association Junior champion, Stanford recently won the 2020 AJGA Junior at Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina, by five shots with rounds of 69-67-68. This past summer, he advanced to the final match at the VSGA State Amateur, losing to current Hokie Mark Lawrence, Jr., and finished seventh in the State Open of Virginia at Ballyhack Golf Club. Stanford has represented Virginia in multiple team competitions, including the 2019 Capital Cup, the 2019 and 2020 Virginia/Carolinas Junior Team Matches and the 2020 VSGA Captain's Putter Matches at the Greenbrier.
"An excellent student, competitor and teammate, David embodies everything that a coach could ask for in a member of their team," Sharp said. "Coach Eckstein and I believe he will make significant contributions as soon as he arrives on campus. He is such a steady player, which is simply a reflection of his outstanding work ethic and competitiveness. There are no guarantees in this game, of course, but I am excited to see what he will accomplish in his career at Virginia Tech and am grateful that he has chosen to become a member of our community in Blacksburg."
