BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought match Saturday night against a tough Syracuse team. Sophomore Nick Blacklock scored the lone goal for Tech, the first of his career.
As usual, the Hokies (0-1-2) were on the attack early against the Orange (0-1-2), as shots by Kahlil Dover (3rd) and Blacklock (6th) were great early chances.
Syracuse was the first to find the back of the net, as Noah Singelmann's corner kick in the 14th minute found the head of Sondre Norheim, who in turn was able to flick his shot by keeper Mathijs Swaneveld.
Tech would respond 10 minutes later when Landon Ameres cut his way through several Syracuse defenders to find Blacklock with space inside the box. The Hellertown, Pennsylvania native used his right foot to fire a shot to the bottom right of the net and past the out stretched legs of Syracuse's keeper Russell Shealy.
The opening period saw the Hokies with several more chances to take a lead into the half, but stout defense saw the game head into the break tied at 1-1.
In the second frame the Hokies kept up their aggression as they shot the ball 10 times, but timely saves and shots just off the mark kept Tech off the board.
Tech had the majority of the chances, in both overtime periods, putting constant pressure on Shealy, but the defense of the Orange held strong until time expired.
