Tech hosts in-state rival Virginia in Commonwealth Clash

Match Notes

BLACKSBURG  – To conclude their fall home matches, the Virginia Tech volleyball team will take on in-state rival Virginia in a pair of outings on Friday at 6 p.m. ET and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. The first contest will be available through the ACC Network Extra with the second outing being available through the ACC Network. 

Fan information: To follow the public health guidelines and ensure the safety of Virginia Tech's student-athletes, staff, and fans, all Olympic fall sports at Virginia Tech will compete without fans in attendance until further notice. Tech volleyball, men's soccer and women's soccer matches will be played without spectators, while only essential staff and family members of the student-athletes will be allowed in attendance.

Last time out, Tech defeated North Carolina 3-2 in a five-set thriller on Sept. 25 in Cassell. This is the second straight season the Hokies have defeated UNC at home. Graduate student Kaity Smith tallied the 25th double-double of her career with 21 kills and 14 digs in the win over UNC. First-year head coach Marci Byers earned her first ACC victory with the 3-2 win over North Carolina. 

Last time out against Virginia, the Cavaliers rolled past Tech in a 3-0 win in Cassell. Virginia Tech and Virginia are tied in the overall series at 37-37. The last Hokie victory over the Cavaliers came in 2018 in a 3-0 win in Blacksburg. Virginia has claimed the last three outings in the series. 
 
The Cavaliers are led by Aaron Smith who is entering his fourth season at the Virginia head coach helm. Aaron Smith is 29-62 all-time at Virginia and is 3-3 against the Hokies since taking over in 2017. The Cavaliers are 1-1 to start the season with a 3-0 win over The Citadel and then a 3-0 loss to Duke in Charlottesville.
