BLACKSBURG – This Saturday, the Virginia Tech swim and dive team will kick off its Hokie Belt Challenge with an intrasquad meet.
The Hokie Belt Challenge, a tradition the program started last season, is a year long competition where the team gets split into a maroon and orange squad. The challenge consists of a point system that takes into account GPA, inner squad meets, attendance, physical challenges, drive for 25, discipline and the Hokie Spirit Award.
"The Hokie Belt Challenge is our way of keeping the whole team engaged/accountable during the Academic and Athletic Year," assistant coach Payton Brooks said. "It helps us create a healthy competition within the team that will unify us as Hokies."
The program has a physical Hokie belt, colored maroon and orange, on display in a common area for the athletes. Every year a new plaque will be added on the belt to represent the winning team.
"Myself, all the coaches and the kids are excited for this season's Hokie Belt Challenge," head coach Sergio Lopez Miro said. "I am very happy we are able to race and put the kids back into the environment that they love."
