Hokies open 2020 season with non-conference match at Virginia

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team is set to open its 2020 campaign with a non-conference regular season matchup at in-state rival Virginia. This game will mark the first of two scheduled meetings between the two programs this year (a home-and-home series) as the Cavaliers will make a return trip to Blacksburg on Sept. 25.

Tech versus Virginia - Round 1
- The Hokies and the Cavaliers each open their 2020 campaign Saturday with the first non-conference regular season matchup between the two teams since 1996, a 1-0 victory by Virginia in Charlottesville (Sept. 24).
- In all, before Tech joined the ACC, the two teams played three non-conference matches with Virginia winning all three (1994 and 1995).
- Saturday's match marks the first of two scheduled meetings between the two schools this year (a home-and-home series). Only four times in the series history have the two squads squared off twice during the season with mixed results.

September start, nothing new
- For the first time since the 2002 season, the Hokies will kickoff the year with its first match of the season in the month of September. 
- Tech opened that campaign as a member of the BIG EAST on Sept. 1, under head coach Jerry Cheynet, with a 5-0 loss at No. 7 Notre Dame.
- In all, the Hokies have started the year eight times with their first match in September including their first seven seasons as a program (1993-99).
- The latest start to a Tech season, before the 2020 campaign, goes all the way back to its first year of competition - 1993 under head coach Sam Okpodu. The Hokies opened that year on Sept. 6 with a 4-3 victory at Liberty and won four straight.

Tech in season openers
- Overall, the Hokies are 17-7-3 in season openers and are unbeaten in 11 straight (10-0-1). The Hokies had won nine straight before a 2018 season-opening 0-0 tie to San Diego. 
- Under head coach Chugger Adair, the program is 8-0-1 in season openers.
- In nine seasons under Adair, Tech has outscored its opponents 25-2 in season openers.

Season openers away from Blacksburg
- Overall, the Hokies are 10-7-0 in season openers played away from Blacksburg and have a five match winning streak, last winning 1-0 in overtime at San Diego to start the 2017 season.
- Tech has not lost a season opener (home, road, neutral) since a 2-1 defeat at Davidson on Aug. 23, 2008.
- On the road, Tech has an 8-7 mark, while the Hokies are 2-0 at a neutral site
- Under head coach Chugger Adair, the program is 4-0-0 in season openers away from Blacksburg.
- Under Adair, Tech has outscored its opponents 8-1 in season openers away from home.

Tech success under Adair - non-conference
- Tech has lost just 14 non-conference matches under Chugger Adair, 10 of those have been in the postseason - seven in the NCAA Championship and three in the ACC tournament. 
- The four losses in the regular season include on the road at Tennessee, Sept. 10, 2017 (3-1), and Alabama, Aug. 30, 2018 (1-0).
- Two of those four losses were in Blacksburg - Ohio State on Sept. 1, 2016 (2-1) and Nebraska on Sept. 9, 2011 (4-3, 2OT).
- In 10 seasons under Adair, Tech is 65-4-6 in non-conference regular-season matches.
