VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship
Virginia Tech women's golfer Becca DiNunzio defeated teammate Emily Mahar in a playoff to win the title at the weather-shortened VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship. The three-day tournament was played at the 5,984-yard, par 71 River Course of the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The final round of the tournament got off to a late start, as Wednesday's weather-delayed second round had to be completed on Thursday morning. The final round was suspended twice on Thursday afternoon, as lightning forced the competitors off the course. Due to the weather issues, the final round was shortened to nine holes and the championship was abbreviated to 45 holes.
DiNunzio, a rising sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, was 1-under through Thursday's nine holes and ended with a 1-over 179, tying teammate and second round leader Mahar. Mahar, a rising senior from Brisbane, Australia, shot a 1-over 37 on Thursday. DiNunzio defeated Mahar on the second playoff hole to claim the title.
Teammate Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, was the leader after the first round on Tuesday and finished in fourth place. Defending champion Lauren Greenlief finished third this year.
This is the second year DiNunzio has finished in the top two of the championship, having been the runner-up to Greenlief last year at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond, Virginia. DiNunzio becomes the second Virginia Tech golfer to win the title, following Amanda Hollandsworth, who was the 2017 champion. This is the sixth consecutive year that a Hokie has been in the top two of the tournament.
Tennessee Women's Amateur Championship
Virginia Tech women's golfer Alyssa Montgomery tied for seventh place at the 2020 Tennessee Women's Amateur Championship on Thursday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the 6,297-yard, par 72 Tennessee National Golf Club in Loudon, Tennessee.
Montgomery, a rising sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, posted a three-round total of 4-over 220. Mikayla Bardwell of Knoxville and the University of Tennessee won the title at 3-under 213.
