Amanda Shimp elevated to Associate Head Coach of lacrosse program

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech lacrosse Head Coach John Sung announced the promotion of Amanda Shimp to Associate Head Coach Thursday morning.

"I am pleased to announce that Amanda Shimp has been elevated to Associate Head Coach of our program," Sung commented Thursday. "Amanda has been a critical piece in helping me build programs. At Winthrop University Amanda helped me construct a new program from the ground up and we went on to win back-to-back Big South Championships. Here she has assisted the rebuilding process at Virginia Tech and helped us become a top 20 program. She has shown why she is deserving of this promotion."

Shimp, who coaches the defense, led the nation's seventh-best defense in terms of goals against average, posting a 7.90 mark. In her first four years at Tech, Shimp has placed multiple athletes on the All-ACC teams including defenders Elena Ricci and Kelly Glatthorn.

Three defensive players earned VaSID All-State honors in 2020; Ricci, Kendall Welch and Mary Clare McCarthy.

"I am grateful for her loyalty over the many years and I am excited to see the future of the Virginia Tech lacrosse program," Sung said.
