BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech sophomore Carson Taylor has been named to the 2020 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List, announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
The award is given annually to the top Division-I collegiate catcher, as 60 players were nominated for this year's honor. The semifinalists will be announced on May 19, with finalists slated to be released on June 2, followed by the award presentation on June 25 in Wichita, Kansas.
The native of Duluth, Georgia, Taylor is currently leading Tech with a .407 batting average, a .611 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage. He has started all 15 games, and also leads the team in runs (17), doubles (6), RBI (18), walks (12), hit-by-pitches (3) and has struck out just five times in 54 at-bats. Many of his numbers rank him among the top 150 in the nation, including in the top 100 in average (75th), doubles (67th), on-base percentage (34th), runs (79th), RBI (56th) and toughest to strikeout (96th).
Taylor has six multi-hit games this year, four multi-run scoring games and three multi-RBI contests, all of which he added to last night in Tech's victory over William & Mary. Leading the Hokies at the plate in the rout, he tied a season high with four hits, including a pair of doubles, scored a career-high tying four times and collected a career-high five RBI. In fact, in the 10-run third, Taylor accounted for five of the runs on two hits – he scored twice and drove in three more.
