Frank records eight points as Hokies open 2020 with victory

BLACKSBURG – Freshman midfielder Kayla Frank scored the game's first three goals, part of a 5-0 run and the Virginia Tech lacrosse team got off to a winning start to the 2020 season Saturday afternoon inside the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility defeating Davidson 17-10.
 
Tech begins the season with a victory for the third time in the last four years ahead of an in-state showdown at James Madison Wednesday in Harrisonburg.
 
"Eight points in her first college game is a great starting point for the year," head coach John Sung said of the Moorestown, New Jersey native who scored three times and provided a game-high five assists.
 
Frank was a part of the starting midfield with juniors Paige Petty and Emma Crooks that combined to score 16 of the squad's 27 points in the game. All three recorded hat tricks and freshman Jacelyn Lazore also added two goals from the midfield.
 
In the attack, senior Julia Bolte provided four points (two goals, two assists) and captain Taylor Caskey added three points (one goal, two assists). 
 
In goal for Tech was Angie Benson making her first appearance on a competitive lacrosse field in two year. The Palm City, Florida native recorded 11 saves and two ground balls in 48 minutes of work. She faced 25 shots from the Wildcats.
 
Down the stretch, the Hokies held a 16-5 lead before Davidson scored five of the game's final six goals.
 
Davidson was led by three points apiece from Oliva Carey and Sam Rippley. Starting goalie Delaney Guhman made 12 saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Tech held an edge on the draw circle 16-13. Emma Crooks led the team with six.
  • Both teams were efficient on the clear, with Tech converting 20-22 opportunities and Davidson 18-21.
  • The Wildcats out shot the Hokies 30-28, but Tech placed more on frame 23-21.

GAME NOTES

  • Eight Hokies saw their first action, seven freshmen and goalie Angie Benson.
  • All three of Tech's active goalies saw time in the game.
  • With her two assists, Taylor Caskey moved into a tie for 10th place all-time in that category with 42. The senior has 111 total points. 

NEXT TIME ON THE FIELD

  • The Hokies are back on the field on Wednesday, February 12 to take on the seventeenth-ranked James Madison Dukes at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg.
  • Last season the Dukes earned a 14-8 victory over the Hokies at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility. Paige Petty led the Hokies with four points in the game.
  • Tech has never beaten the Dukes in 17 attempts, dating back to the first meeting in 2001.

 NEXT TIME AT THE BEAMER-LAWSON INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

  • The Hokies are back home at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday, February 15 when they play host to the Liberty Flames.
  • Tech has won all seven of the previous meetings with Liberty, including a dominant 15-2 decision in 2017 the last time the two shared a field together. Attacker Kristine Loscalzo led six Hokie goal scorers with four in the game and Taylor Caskey registered two of her own.
