Hokies back on road, face Yellow Jackets

BLACKSBURG – Hitting the road for the second straight midweek game in a row, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team will play at Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday at McCamish Pavilion.

The Hokies (14-8, 5-6 ACC) will go up against the Yellow Jackets (10-12, 4-7), with both being teams coming off losses this past Saturday.

Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 20-6 and has won six games in a row over the Yellow Jackets dating back to 2015. The Hokies are 8-3 in Atlanta, including being 4-1 the last five games in the ATL.

The last time these two faced off, the Hokies trailed by three at the break, but got hot in the second half and won 76-68.

Tech coach Mike Young is 1-2 all-time versus Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner, but won the most recent matchup on Dec. 6, 2017 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, 63-60 at Wofford.

The matchup will be broadcast on ACC Network, with Dave O'Brien (play-by-play), Cory Alexander (analyst) and Katie George (sideline) on the call, while Jon Laaser (play-by-play) and Mike Burnop (analyst) will broadcast on Virginia Tech Sports Properties.

The last time out, the Hokies fell for the third straight game, losing to then-No. 5/6 Florida State at home, shooting 23.3% from 3 and allowing the Seminoles' Devin Vassell to score 24 points (7 3s). Tech outscored FSU 18-11 off TOs & in the paint (32-20) despite a height disadvantage.

After coughing up a season-worst six TOs at Miami, Wabissa Bede got back to his ways with six assists and two TOs vs. FSU, with now having the No. 4 A/T ratio nationally. Rarely fouling teams, VT commits the eighth-fewest fouls per game in the nation with 13.8 and tied its second-fewest in an ACC game this season with 12 vs. FSU Saturday.

SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH

•  The Yellow Jackets are coming off an 80-72 road loss at Notre Dame (13-8, 4-6) this past Saturday despite Jose Alvarado pouring in 25 points and James Banks III tallying a double-double. Georgia Tech finished with 25 second-chance points and outscored the Fighting Irish 44-18 in the paint. 

•  Pastner enters his fourth season as the head coach in Atlanta, following a seven-year run at Memphis where he led the Tigers to four NCAA Tournament appearances. With the Jackets, he earned the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year.

•  Georgia Tech is paced by Banks and his 2.73 blocks per game, ranking 17th nationally and second in the ACC and Michael Devoe and his team-high 16.2 points per game. 

•  The Jackets rank 25th in the land in blocked shots per game and third in the conference with 4.9 a contest and sit 62nd overall and fourth in the league in defensive field-goal percentage at 40.3 percent.
