BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team (20-6, 10-5) will put its four-game winning streak on the line Sunday afternoon against rival Virginia at home on Carilion Clinic Court as part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529.
Sunday will also be Senior Day as the program recognizes the contributions of its senior class.
Tech's 68-62 victory over Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion was the first in program history at the venue, another in a long list that this year's team is accumulating.
"The truth is that we've won 10 ACC games, the truth is that we've got our fourth straight 20-win season here and the truth is the Liz Kitley is pretty good," head coach Kenny Brooks told Bryant Johnson courtside postgame. "We're going to really enjoy this opportunity that we came here. We beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame. For us it shows where we've come with this program."
Reigning ACC Freshman of the Week Elizabeth Kitley notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while also registering a career-high eight blocks. She has averaged 18 points and eight rebounds a game during Tech's four-game winning streak.
"Sounds like the rookie of the year to me," Brooks continued. "I love her development and what she's becoming. I knew she was going to become this, we just hoped it was going to be this fast but she gives us an option inside and out now where it's a really tough guard for a lot of people. I said it, I'll campaign for it, people probably don't understand that this kid is probably the best freshman in the league."
Kitley is the first Hokie to win Freshman of the Week honors twice.
