Hokies travel to Elon for Saturday afternoon matchup

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse program will take its 3-1 record on the road to Elon for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Phoenix on Saturday, February 22. Tech was last on the field Wednesday afternoon defeating Radford 19-2 behind a career-high five goals from junior attacker Sarah Lubnow and Kayla Frank's great play in the midfield.
 
Frank, a freshman recorded a program record eight assists in Tech's victory over Radford. She has 11 total points and now has 26 through her first four games of her career. 
 
"She's such a competitor and she is just scratching the surface of what she can be which is exciting for us," head coach John Sung commented on her performance. "You never know when you're going to score 11 points in a game or not, but she is the type of player who can do that."
 
Frank is the only player in the ACC to record double digit figures in both goals and assists so far in 2020.
 
Tech's leading goal scorer continues to be Paige Petty, the junior midfielder who has 16 on the season and 20 total points. 
 
On the defensive end, Leigh Lingo has caused eight turnovers, while Elena Ricci has six in that category and leads the squad with 16 ground balls. 
 
In goal, Angie Benson owns a 5.26 goals against average and has made 32 saves on 71 shots faced.

THE PHOENIX
Elon has only played one game so far in 2020, a 12-5 victory over the Campbell Camels where four players scored two goals, led by Mae McGlynn who recorded three total points. 
 
Midfielder Gillian Curran had a game-best 10 draw controls and goalie Allie Cerrone made nine saves in the win. 
 
The Phoenix were chosen to finish fifth in the seven-team CAA following a 6-12 2019 campaign.
 
THE SERIES WITH ELON

  • Tech is 3-1 against the Phoenix defeating them in each of the last two seasons. In 2019 the Hokies earned a 16-8 victory behind six goals from Emma Crooks and another four from Paige Petty. Morgan Berman registered the win in goal with five saves and four ground balls.

NEXT TIME ON THE FIELD

  • The Hokies will travel to Cincinnati (Feb. 26) and then play their first ACC game of the season at Louisville (Feb. 29) next week.
  • Tech won the only meeting in history versus Cincinnati, a 19-8 contest held at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility in 2019. Paige Petty led all scorers with six goals, while Julia Bolte and Sarah Lubnow each added three points. Defender Elena Ricci corralled seven draw controls and had three ground balls in the contest.
  • Louisville leads the all-time series 5-2, although Tech has won the meeting in each of the last two seasons, both one-goal contests. Last season the Hokies won 17-16 at Thompson Field behind six points from Mary Claire Byrne, five goals from Paige Petty and four points from Julia Bolte. 

 
NEXT TIME AT THE BEAMER-LAWSON INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

  • The Hokies are back home at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Wednesday, March 4 when they play host to the William & Mary Tribe.
  • Tech has won all three of the past four meetings with the Tribe, but trail in the all-time series 4-6.
  • The last meeting was a 17-12 victory for Tech in 2017, that featured one half played at Thompson Field and one played indoors due to weather. Five Hokies scored hat tricks led by Marissa Davey's five points and in goal Meagh Graham made 10 saves.
