Hokies set to open 2020 ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech is set to open the 2020 Women's Swimming and Men's & Women's Diving ACC Championships, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 19. Diving will start at 11 a.m. with preliminaries while swimming will get started at 5:15 p.m. with the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.

THE HOKIES

  • The Hokies are a young team entering into the 2020 ACC Championships, represented by 13 freshmen or sophomores. Despite the youth, the six sophomores all competed last season at ACCs.
  • Sophomore Joelle Vereb holds Virginia Tech top-5 times in five individual events, including moving into second all-time in the 50 free this season. In addition, Vereb is a member of 14 relays with top-10 times.
    • She also has the top times this season in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast and 100 fly. Additionally holds the top times as part of every relay except the 800 free.
  • Freshman Brooke Travis has also had a strong rookie season. She holds the team's top times this season in the 500 free, 1,000 free, 1650 free and 400 IM. Additionally as a member of the 800 free relay team.
    • In addition, she moved into seventh on the program's all-time list in the 1650.
  • Several other Hokies hold the season's top times in their respective events:
    • Margarita Ryan (Sr.) – 100 back
    • Emily Meilus (Jr.)  – 200 back | 200 IM
    • Julia Smith (Fr.)  – 200 breast
    • Morgan Miller (Fr.) – 200 fly
  • Current Hokies have also moved into or up the program's top-10 times list-
    • Anna Landon – 50 free, 6th
    • Sarah Shackelford – 100 free, 7th
    • Loulou Vos – 200 free, 6th
    • Travis – 1650 free, 7th | 200 back, 8th
  • Vos was named ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week on Feb. 11.

TECH DIVING

  • Sophomore Noah Zawadzki has claimed ACC Diver of the Week honors twice this season, bringing his career total to three.
    • This season he claimed honors having swept the springboard competition in Tech men's win over Virginia. He also took home the honors after the Hokies opening win over George Washington.
  • Sophomore Teagan Moravek won seven events this season for the Hokies. Most recently, Moravek swept the springboard events against NC State.
  • Joining them on the boards this week are freshmen Taj Cole and Joseph Perreault on the men's side. Sophomore Izzi Mroz and junior Regan Westwood will compete for the women. 

THE FIELD
NC State enters the week ranked third in the most recent CSCAA TYR Top-25. Additionally, the Wolfpack is the defending ACC Champions. Virginia is also in the top-10 at sixth. Notre Dame is ranked 12th while North Carolina comes in at 15th. Louisville is ranked 19th and Florida State rounds out the standings at 25th.
