Hokies enter top-25 rankings for first time

BLACKSBURG – After a 3-2 showing against five top-25 opponents at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, Virginia Tech appeared in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll Tuesday.
 
Tech (7-3) enter the rankings at No. 24 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll. The Hokies received votes in both polls the past two weeks.
 
At the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational this past weekend, Tech went 3-2 against five top-25 opponents. The Hokies defeated No. 18/17 South Carolina, No. 14/13 Minnesota and No. 21/23 Northwestern.
 
Center fielder Darby Trull started all five games in Clearwater hitting .412 with four RBIs. Kaylee Hewitt earned her first career win against a ranked opponent after she went six innings and allowing only one run to Minnesota.
 
Trull, Hewitt and the Hokies return to the field this weekend for their third tournament of the season, the Charleston Classic. Tech's first game is Friday at 9 a.m. ET against Army.
