Petty placed on initial Tewaaraton Award Watch List of 2020

WASHINGTON, DC, February 13 – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced the 2020 Tewaaraton Award men's and women's watch lists. The lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the Tewaaraton Award. 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the Award.

On the men's side four of the five Tewaaraton Finalists return from 2019 (Penn State's Grant Ament, Maryland's Jared Bernhardt, Yale's TD Ierlan and Princeton's Michael Sowers), while all five women's finalists from 2019 graduated last year.

"As we head into our 20th anniversary, we couldn't be more excited to watch these talented players this season and see who rises to the top in May," said Jeff Harvey, chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. "The Tewaaraton Foundation has accomplished a lot in 20 years, and we're extremely thankful for our dedicated board members and hard-working volunteers who have done so much to build and grow this award."

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Virginia Tech midfielder Paige Petty is included on the Watch List for the second consecutive season. She is Tech's leading goal scorer in 2020 with seven through two games, that included a five-goal showing in the season-opening victory over Davidson.

After just two seasons the Bernardsville, New Jersey native has already placed herself amongst some of the best to ever play at Tech. Petty is the only Hokie to ever earn multiple first team All-ACC awards, multiple IWLCA All-Region selections and an All-American nod in 2018.

She added All-ACC Academic Team to her list of accolades last season and has been recognized by the state's sports information directors as an All-State performer twice. Petty has also been featured on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, an award given annually to the top player in the nation.

Petty concluded the 2019 season with a 3.26 career goals per game average, which ranked 10th amongst active student-athletes in Division 1.

During the 2019 season, Petty's single-season totals included:

  • Most goals in a single season (66)
  • She is sixth all-time in goals (124)
  • She is tied for tenth in points all-time (139)
  • Tied for first for the most points scored in a single season (74)

Petty now ranks eighth in points at Virginia Tech with 147, fifth in career goals (131) and is seventh in draw controls (141).

The junior midfielder was included on the List last season as well.

NEXT TIME AT THE BEAMER-LAWSON INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

  • The Hokies are back home at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday, February 15 when they play host to the Liberty Flames.
  • Tech has won all seven of the previous meetings with Liberty, including a dominant 15-2 decision in 2017 the last time the two shared a field together. Attacker Kristine Loscalzo led six Hokie goal scorers with four in the game and Taylor Caskey registered two of her own.
