Hokies lose overtime clash at James Madison Wednesday

HARRISONBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team battled seventeenth-ranked JMU all night, bur eventually fell 9-8 in overtime at Sentara Park Wednesday evening.
 
Maddie McDaniel's goal with 16 seconds left in the overtime period was the difference, bringing the game to an end following some sloppy play at the end of regulation and throughout the overtime period. 
 
The Hokies fall to 1-1 ahead of Saturday's clash vs. Liberty.
 
Both squads had chances with the ball in their stick but were unable to make a play sending the game to overtime 
 
After Paige Petty scored the first goal of the game, Madison rebounded scoring the game's next four goals to take a 4-1 lead and force a timeout. But the Hokies steadied themselves and went on a run the rest of the half to take a 6-5 lead into the locker room. 
 
Freshman midfielder Kayla Frank again led the offensive effort scoring three goals, scoring a second successive hat trick.  
 
Down the stretch, it took a goal by Sarah Lubnow through traffic to tie the game up before the hectic ending that included multiple turnovers and a card being issued. Neither team could take advantage before the horn sounded sending the game into overtime.
 


 
In the extra session, JMU won the first draw and had an opportunity to win it but was denied by the Hokies' defense that forced 24 turnovers. Angie Benson made seven saves in the game.
 
Emma Crooks had four draw controls and four ground balls in the midfield and defender Leigh Lingo had a career-best five caused turnovers. 
 
James Madison improved to 1-1 on the season after an opening day loss.
 
JMU was led in scoring by Isabella Petersen's four goals. Logan Brennan registered five total points with three goals and two assists. In cage, Molly Dougherty made eight saves in the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Both teams finished with 24 turnovers in the game.
  • Ground balls were even at 19 a piece.
  • JMU had the edge on the draw circle 11-9.
  • The Hokies held a slight edge in shots 21-20.

 
GAME NOTES

  • The game was the first one to go into overtime in the series in 18 games.
  • Senior Julia Bolte recorded two assists bringing her career total to 57.
  • With her two assists, Taylor Caskey moved into a tie for ninth place all-time in that category with 44. The senior has 114 total points. 
  • Paige Petty climbed above former teammate Tristan McGinley and took hold of eighth place all-time in scoring with her two goals against the Dukes. She now has 131 in her career. 

 
NEXT TIME AT THE BEAMER-LAWSON INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

  • The Hokies are back home at the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday, February 15 when they play host to the Liberty Flames.
  • Tech has won all seven of the previous meetings with Liberty, including a dominant 15-2 decision in 2017 the last time the two shared a field together. Attacker Kristine Loscalzo led six Hokie goal scorers with four in the game and Taylor Caskey registered two of her own.
