BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's basketball program is back on the court on Sunday, February 2 to take on the Miami Hurricanes on Carilion Clinic Court. The matchup will be the only one in the regular season between the programs who have met twice annually until the implementation of the pod system in the ACC this season.
Last time on the court, the Hokies fell at Syracuse 67-65 in a game they led by as many as 16 in the third quarter before the Orange mounted a furious comeback.
Elizabeth Kitley led the Hokies in scoring with 10 points and three others, Taja Cole, Aisha Sheppard and Dara Mabrey each had nine. Cole flirted with history as she registered 10 rebounds and nine assists, coming close to securing the program's first triple double. It was her second 10-rebound performance of the season. She leads the conference at 6.6 assists per game.
Sheppard, who was held under 10 points for just the second time this season continued her streak of 27 straight games with a 3-pointer which is a school record. She leads the team at 16.2 points per game.
Tech will look to continue its impressive 15-game home winning streak, which is tied for the fifth-longest in the nation. That stretch includes seven ACC contests dating back to the last time that these programs met in February of 2019 when the Hokies won 73-65 on Carilion Clinic Court. The win snapped a 15-game losing streak to Miami and was the first ranked win for the program in 17 tries.
The Hokies have reached the midway point of the conference slate at 5-4, the best record to date in such a scenario.
