BOONE, N.C. - Virginia Tech sent 13 wrestlers to the 2020 Appalachian State Open Saturday and over half of them placed, including two titles.
Wrestling unattached, Dom and Sam Latona won titles at 141 pounds and 125 pounds, respectively. Saturday was Dom Latona's first action of the season, while it was Sam's third tournament title. Sam also won first place at the 2019 Southeast Open and 2019 ARMS Software/GMU Patriots Open. Dom went 4-0 with a tech fall in the tournament, while Sam went 2-0 and had a major decision.
Jake Hart and Cody Howard both earned second place at the tournament. Hart, competing at 149 pounds, won all three of his matches before the championship and unfortunately had to forfeit midway through the title match due to injury. Howard won second at 184 pounds and had a tech fall in his first match.
Daniel Mancini, wrestling unattached at 157 pounds, won fourth place after going 2-2. At 149 pounds, Caden Darber placed fifth after a 4-1 showing in North Carolina. Finally, Kolton Clark went 3-2 wrestling unattached at 174 pounds to finish sixth.
