Hokies gear up for Commonwealth Clash Sunday afternoon

BLACKSBURG – After an open date on Thursday, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team is gearing up for a trip up I-81 to take on the Virginia Cavaliers in the squad's first meeting of the season on Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.
 
The Hokies are 12-4 (2-3) following last Sunday's defeat in overtime at the hands of the Duke Blue Devils, 72-67. Tech was led by freshman center Elizabeth Kitley who just missed out on a double-double with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds.
 
Taja Cole, who played 43 minutes in the contest registered her first double-double as a Hokie with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the game. In the two games last week, Cole was outstanding, averaging 18 points while shooting better than 57%. She continues to lead the ACC in assists at 6.3 per game.

THE CAVALIERS
Virginia is 7-10 (2-4) on the season following Thursday night's loss 62-56 at Wake Forest. The Cavaliers shot just 37% from the floor and were outrebounded by 19.
 
This week, the Cavaliers swept the ACC awards with guard/forward Jocelyn Willoughby earning Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and guard Shemera Williams collecting Freshman of the Week accolades.
 
Willoughby leads the conference in scoring at 19.8 points per game and is shooting better than 42% from the floor. She also leads the team in rebounds at 7.6 per contest. The East Orange, New Jersey native has scored 20 or more in four straight games.
 
Williams is second on the squad at 10.4 points per game. 
 
NEXT TIME ON THE HARDWOOD
•Tech returns to Carilion Clinic Court on Thursday, January 23 to take on Boston College at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
•The Hokies won last season's contest against the Eagles in Chestnut Hill 95-86 and have won three in a row in the series. Overall Tech leads 15-12. 
•Regan Magarity scored a career-best 30 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the game and Dara Mabrey dropped 26 points to propel the Hokies to victory. The pair were named ACC Player and Freshman of the Week following their performances.
