McGlynn selected by Sky Blue FC in 2020 NWSL College Draft

BALTIMORE – For just the second time in program history, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team had a student-athlete drafted as senior Mandy McGlynn was the No. 20 pick of Sky Blue FC in the 2020 National Women's Soccer League Draft held Thursday afternoon in the Baltimore Convention Center.

McGlynn was the only goalkeeper selected in the 2020 draft and now joins forward Jazmine Reeves as the only women's soccer players drafted out of Tech. Reeves was selected with the 21st pick by the Boston Breakers in the 2014 NWSL Draft. Click here to view the entire 2020 draft class.

"First, I'd just like to thank the Sky Blue organization for selecting me today, I can't wait to be a part of your team and compete day-in and day-out," McGlynn said at the podium after being drafted. "I'd like to thank my amazing family – mom, dad, grandma – for supporting me throughout my career and being there for all the ups and downs and I wouldn't be here without you guys. I love you.

"Thank you to my Virginia Tech coaches – Chugger Adair, Matt Gwilliam and Drew Kopp – for recruiting me and giving me an amazing platform all four years. Thank you to my youth coach Chris Barocas for developing me and making me the goalkeeper I am today. I'd also like to thank Tony DiCicco, he developed my youth coach Chris and as well as myself. He saw something in me at a young age and I wish he could be here today.

"Lastly, thank you to all the teammates that I've had throughout my career for always believing in me and, most importantly, thank you to the NWSL for giving us a league to follow our dreams."

McGlynn became just the third goalkeeper from Tech to be chosen in a draft, joining former men's team goalkeepers – Ben Lundgaard (2018, 21st, Columbus Crew SC) and Chase Harrison (2006, 26th, Real Salt Lake). She is also just the 17th Virginia Tech student-athlete all-time to be selected in the top 20 of that Hokies' respective draft.

The accolades piled up for McGlynn after the 2019 season as she etched her name alongside the best ever to play for the Hokies. Just a few of her postseasons honors included United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American and First Team Scholar All-American, TopDrawerSoccer Best XI First Team, a repeated selection as an All-ACC First Team goalkeeper and the state's Player of the Year.

In 2019, McGlynn stopped 76 shots for an 83.5 save percentage, which was the second-best mark ever in a single season at the school (Karen Crawley, 86.8, 1997). Meanwhile, her 0.772 goals allowed average was also second-best (Caroline Kelly, 0.69, 2014), her 10 shutouts were tied for second (Dayle Colpitts, 11, 2013) and her 12 wins were third all-time.

The Jacksonville, Florida native's career numbers place her in the top three for a career goalkeeper at the school, which includes a school record 32 shutouts and a 0.99 GAA. Her 41 wins, 7,014 minutes played (both most since 2013) and 79.4 save percentage (best since 1997) were second and her 297 saves were third (most since 2006).
