Hokies reach final destination on Tour, enjoy gondola rides through The Floating City Tuesday afternoon

VENICE, ITALY – Check off a fourth historic city for the Virginia Tech women's basketball team as the group reached Venice, their fourth and final stop on their 2019 Foreign Tour Tuesday afternoon. About a 3.5-hour bus ride from Florence where the day began, the team rolled into a harbor and loaded one boat with luggage headed to the hotel and one boat with Hokies eager to explore Venice.

Venice is an archipelago of 118 smaller islands that are joined by bridges and canals. Some estimate there are over 400 bridges in the city. It is the hometown of famous merchant and explorer Marco Polo.

Once on land, there was a short amount of free time to walk around or grab a bite to eat before gondola rides, which nearly everyone took part in. Groups of six piled in and were ushered around the city in a circle that weaved under bridges and around tight corners for about 20 minutes.

Once the Tech contingent was safely ashore, they boarded another boat, this time taking them from Venice to their quarters for the next two days in nearby Lido, a resort on the beach with a spectacular view of the Adriatic Sea.
