Hokies storm back in second half, earn second road victory at Boston College 95-86 Sunday afternoon

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Dara Mabrey made a running 3-pointer from way downtown to end the third quarter which spurred a furious comeback Sunday at the Conte Forum, which culminated in a 95-86 Virginia Tech victory Sunday afternoon. For the Hokies, the 16-point comeback was an exclamation point on a two-game road swing that has Tech heading home 15-7 (2-7) in the ACC. 
 
The afternoon turned into a historic one as the team set a program record for points (95) thanks to a huge comeback effort that included 33 points in the fourth quarter.  
 
Both teams were hot in the first half, with both clubs hitting over 50 percent in the opening half, however it was the Eagles who took a lead into the break thanks in part to seven made 3-point field goals. The game began to turn when BC went on a 13-0 run to take the lead and stretch out a 12-point advantage.
 
Their lead would swell to as many as 16 in the third period but redshirt senior Regan. Magarity led the charge back for the Hokies, scoring the team's first nine points to spark the comeback. As a team the Hokies had a 19-2 run spanning between the third and fourth quarters. Aisha Sheppard came alive in the fourth had back to back 3's to give the Hokies the lead. 
 
Tech's defense stepped up as well, holding the Eagles off from scoring a field goal in the fourth quarter until just under a minute.
 
Magarity finished with another double-double with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Three other Hokies were in double figures; Taylor Emery (12), Sheppard (14) and Mabrey (26).
 
Boston College drops to 14-8 (3-6). The Eagles were led by guard Taylor Ortlepp's 23 points. She canned seven 3-pointers before leaving the game with an apparent ankle injury.  Makayla Dickens also record 20 points and 8 assists in the game, for Boston College who shot 53 percent for the game.
 
Inside the box score:
• Mabrey's 26 is her new ACC high after scoring 22 Thursday night in the victory at Pitt. The freshman, who leads the conference in 3-point shooting percentage went 4 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc and also knocked down all 8 of her free throw attempts. 
• Magarity, who's previous ACC high was 26 back in 2017 at the Conte Forum recorded her new overall career best Sunday scoring 30 points. She also tallied 14 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season.
 
Other key notes:
• The 95 points scored sets a new Virginia Tech record for points in an ACC contest
• The Hokie outshot Boston College from the free throw line 25-12. Tech made 20 of their attempts, most of them down the stretch in the fourth quarter when the Eagles tried to extend the game. 
 
Next game: The Hokies are back home on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 10 at noon to play host to the Louisville Cardinals. That contest will be available on Regional Sports Networks. 
 
February 10 will be Tech's Play 4 Kay day, where fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer.
