Tech battles, falls at Clemson 73-66 Sunday afternoon

CLEMSON, S.C.  –  After upsetting No. 14 Miami at home on Thursday night, Virginia Tech had a chance for more history Sunday afternoon could the Hokies earn a fourth road ACC win, the most in program history. But it was the Tigers who would come away with the victory, with big runs on both the third and fourth quarters to earn a 73-66 win. 
 
Tech's record now stands at 17-10 (4-10) with two games left in the regular season. Clemson moved to 18-10 (9-6) with the result.

The Hokies took control of the game in the second quarter with a 15-0 run keyed buy shots from the perimeter from Taylor emery and Kendyl Brooks and led at the half 33-24. 
 
But in the third, Clemson got back into the game on the back of guard Simone Westbrook who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and center Kobi Thornton who finished the game with a double-double, 23 points and 10 rebounds. 

After being held to just 10 of 38 shooting in the first half, the Tigers were nearly 50 percent from the floor in the second half and were able to set up their defense which picked up in the frontcourt, as they guarded nearly all 90 feet.
 
Regan Magarity led the Hokies in scoring with 17 points, while Emery (16) and Trinity Baptiste (11) were also in double figures. The league's leader in rebounds, Magarity pulled down 9 in the game, but the squad was outrebounded 43-39 on the afternoon.
 
Tech also saw contributions from a trio of Hokies who scored six points; Aisha Shepppard, Brooks and Dara Mabrey.
 
After making 14 triples last time out against Miami, the Hokies were just 6 of 25 from distance against the Tigers.
 
Inside the box score:
• Magarity was just a rebound shy of recording her 18thdouble-double of the season
• The 19 turnovers were the most in a game since the Hokies committed 23 against FSU on 1/27/19
• Tech got to the free throw line eight times in the games, while Clemson got 22 attempts.
 
What's next: 
Virginia Tech is back home on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. to take on the Virginia Cavaliers as part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529. In the first meeting of the season, the Cavaliers won on their home court 62-58.
