Hokies extend road winning streak to three, upend Blue Devils 64-57 Thursday night

DURHAM, N.C. –Kenny Brooks and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team snapped one long streak and continued one of their own Thursday night as the Hokies earned a 64-57 win at Cameron Indoor Stadium over the Duke Blue Devils. It was the program's first win in the building since 1998 and first win in the series in 25 tries. 

The win moves the Hokies to 16-8 on the season and 3-8 in conference play ahead of Sunday's trip to Georgia Tech. 

"It's a good win for us, it's been a long time since Tech has beaten Duke," head coach Kenny Brooks commented postgame. "This is a really good win for us. Our new mantra is let's just go 1-0. Forget the record. We know we're a better team than our record shows. Let's just go 1-0. Tonight, we accomplished that, and I'm very happy for the kids."

 


 
 
Tech had a very balanced attack early on in the game, with six players recording field goals in the first half, including Alexis Jean who was back in the starting lineup and contributed six points and a rebound.
 
The Hokies went on an 11-0 spurt in the second frame keyed by two Aisha Sheppard 3-pointers to take a 27-20 lead, one that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the evening.
 
Tech's largest lead would come with 4:05 to play in the fourth, and Duke would come no closer than the seven-point final margin. The Blue Devils (11-13, 3-9) were led by junior Haley Gorecki who went for 26 points and also pulled down 8 boards. 
 
Down the stretch Taylor Emery was able to salt the game away from the free throw line, making all six of her attempts and finishing the game with 13 points. Tech also got contributions from Kendyl Brooks who knocked in a triple, Dara Mabrey who scored six points and dished out three assists and forward Trinity Baptiste who had six points and eight rebounds in the game.
 
Regan Magarity took over the game in the fourth quarter, scoring nine straight points for the Hokies. She finished the game 9 for 15 for 22 points on the offensive end. The league's leader in rebounds, Magarity pulled down 18, tying her career best and recording her 16th double-double of the season. 
 


 
With her 22 points, she moved into fifth place all-time at Virginia Tech in career points scored. 
 
Inside the box score:
• The Hokies held an edge on the glass 41-31, thanks in part to Magarity's 18.
• Tech, the league's best free throw shooting team was 12 of 13 from the line, including closing out the fourth quarter there for three consecutive possessions.
• Both teams shot an identical 22-58 from the field, but Tech connected on the long ball two more times.

Other key notes:
• With the win, Tech has earned three road wins in ACC play for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
• Forward Regan Magarity passed Christi Osbourne (1991-1995) for fifth all-time in scoring at Virginia Tech with her 22 points in the game. She now stands at 1,521 points. Standing in fourth place is Jenny Root (1,582 points from 1991-95).
• The win, Tech's third in ACC play on the road, marks the first time since the 2011-12 season that the program has accomplished the feat. 
 
What's next: The Hokies will travel to Atlanta on Sunday, Feb. 17 for a matchup against Georgia Tech. Tip off against the Jackets is set for 1 p.m.
 
Tech will be back home in Cassell Coliseum on Thursday, Feb. 21 for 80's Throwback night against the Miami Hurricanes.
