Tech student-athletes find academic success this fall

BLACKSBURG – The 2018 fall semester was an outstanding one for Virginia Tech's student-athletes, as 303 out of the 573 student-athletes on sport rosters earned a 3.0 grade-point average during the semester. That number represents 53 percent of Tech's total student-athlete population.

In all, 180 student-athletes made the Dean's List. Those who make the Dean's List finished with a 3.40 GPA or better for the semester.

Tech athletics department officials recognized a large contingent of those who earned a 3.0 in the first half of Wednesday night's men's basketball game at Carilion Clinic Court. The group received a nice ovation from the patrons in attendance.

As one might expect, Tech's individual sport teams performed strongly in the classroom as well. Fifteen of the 22 varsity teams achieved a 3.0 GPA or better following the fall semester.

From a team perspective, the teams with the top GPAs from the fall semester were women's tennis (3.58), men's tennis (3.52), volleyball (3.51), women's golf (3.50), women's cross country (3.48), women's soccer (3.38), women's basketball (3.30), women's swimming (3.25), men's basketball (3.22) and lacrosse (3.19).

Overall, Tech's student-athletes are continuing their gains built in previous semesters. The overall student-athlete GPA for the fall semester was a 3.02 and the overall cumulative GPA of Tech's student-athletes is 3.02 following the conclusion of the fall.

In addition, several of Tech's student-athletes and teams received recognition from the ACC for their academic excellence this fall semester. The ACC named 15 Tech student-athletes to the All-Academic Team in five different sports, including women's soccer (4), volleyball (4), men's cross country (3), women's cross country (2), and men's soccer (2).
