Tournament Notes

  • Virginia Tech is sending eight wrestlers to Vegas this weekend. Two of the eight are ranked by InterMat this week, Hunter Bolen (No. 9) and Mitch Moore (No. 18).
  • Four weight classes at the Cliff Keen project to feature 11 of InterMat's top-20 wrestlers, 133 pounds, 149, 184 and 197.
  • Hunter Bolen looks to continue his perfect season. Bolen is 8-0 on the season and most recently won the 184-pound title at the Navy Classic after posting a 5-0 record. The 184-pound division at the Cliff Keen projects to be the most competitive with seven of InterMat's top-10 wrestlers in the field.
  • Mitch Moore could have an opportunity to avenge his only dual loss of the season to No. 1 Luke Pletcher of Ohio State. Pletcher and the Buckeyes are scheduled to compete in the tournament.
  • Tech is one of three ACC teams participating, along with NC State and Virginia. The Hokies will travel to both schools later this season.
  • Two of Tech's previous dual opponents will be in Las Vegas this weekend, Northwestern and Ohio State. The Hokies beat Northwestern 21-18 at the Mat on the Mound and upset Ohio State 21-15 in Columbus.

Other Notes

  • Tech is ranked fifth in the country this week by the NWCA Coaches Poll. This is the third-straight week that the Hokies are featured in the top-5 of the rankings.
  • Four Hokies are featured in this week's InterMat rankings, David McFadden (No. 6), Hunter Bolen (No. 9), Mitch Moore (No. 18) and B.C. LaPrade (No. 19).
  • After posting five wins at the Navy Classic, David McFadden reached 93 career wins which is tied for 15th in Virginia Tech history. He is approaching 100 wins, a feat only 12 Hokies have ever accomplished.
