Hokies claim home wins on Friday night

Full Results vs. Queens/Richmond

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams claimed wins on Friday night. Tech's women defeated DII No. 1 Queens, 166-116, and had the 189-105 win over Richmond. The men's team downed DII No. 1 Queens 173-86.
 



HOKIES MEN
The Tech men opened with a second and third place finish in the 200 medley relay. Connor Doyle, AJ Pouch, Alex Hines and Justin Rich posted a time of 1:32.18. Their teammates, Forest Webb, Cobi Lopez Miro, Henry Claesson and Noah Desman finished just tenths behind with 1:32.53.
 
Filippo Dal Maso added a first place finish in the 100 freestyle in 9:16.88 and was followed by fellow sophomore Brennen Doss in second with a 9:26.24. Dal Maso went on to win the 500 freestyle later in the meet with a time of 4:31.13.
 
In the 200 freestyle, Lane Stone led the way with 1:37.99 while Antani Ivanov followed up in third with a 1:40.84.
 
Sam Tornqvist led a Hokies one, two, three finish in the 100 backstroke. Tornqvist posted a time of 49.96 while a pair of freshmen followed behind with Will Koeppen (50.89) and Forest Webb (51.01).
 
Tech had a one, three finish in the 100 breaststroke with Simon Shi in 56.13 and AJ Pouch coming in at 57.39. In the 100 butterfly, Ivanov took the top spot in 1:46.60 while Blake Manoff was second in 1:49.71.
 
The Hokies dominated in the sprint frees as Thomas Hallock took both the 50 and 100 with times of 20.26 and 45.52, respectively. Claesson followed in second in the 50 free (20.85) while Aaron Boyd was third in the 100 (47.07).
 
Tornqvist led another top-three sweep in the backstroke, this time the 200 as he came in 1:48.91 followed by Stone (1:50.86) and Webb (1:52.58). Shi won the 200 breaststroke with 2:01.96 and freshman Pouch turned in a 2:03.41 to come in second.
 
Manoff closed off the individual events with a 1:50.41 in the 200 IM to take first.

Tech wrapped up swimming with first place in the 400 freestyle behind Claesson, Ivanov, Dal Maso and Stone at 3:01.75.
 
The men exhibitioned diving events since Queens did not have a team.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Tech came out strong with a win in the 200 medley relay off swims from Margarita Ryan, Joelle Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Anna Landon at 1:42.87. They were followed by Emily Meilus, Jenna Thompson, Julia Bruneau and Sarah Shackelford in third (1:44.43).
 
Brooke Travis turned in a second place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:19.46. Loulou Vos got the Hokies a win, taking first in the 200 free (1:51.46) while freshman Rose Pouch turned in a third place 1:52.73 in the event. Vos also won the 500 freestyle (4:59.29) later in the meet.
 
Ryan gave Tech a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with 55.37. In the 100 breaststroke, Thompson took second (1:04.38) followed by Vereb with a 1:04.42 third-place finish.
 
The Hokies secured a win in the 100 butterfly behind Karisa Franz's 2:04.59. Molly Sheffield was third with 2:07.27. Landon led a one, two finish in the 50 free (23.94) with Bruneau coming in just behind with 23.96. Shackelford was second in the 100 free (51.86).
 
Pouch was the top finisher in the 200 backstroke, finishing second with 2:02.90. Fellow freshman Charlie Burt took third (2:03.33). In the 200 breaststroke, Baillie Cameron was second (2:22.88) followed by Julia Smith (2:23.07).
 
Vereb was second in the 100 butterfly with 55.82 while Pouch wrapped up the individual events for the Hokies with a third-place 2:07.02 in the 200 IM.
 
In the final relay, the Hokies finished second in the 400 free with 3:29.63 turned in by Bruneau, Landon, Alex Slayton and Pouch.
 
On the boards, Brooke Leftwich led the Hokies on the 1-meter with a score of 309.45. She was followed by Teagan Moravek (291.08) in second and Izzi Mroz (289.95) in third. Moravek won the 3-meter with 295.95.
 
UP NEXT: The Hokies will take next week off from competition before returning to the pool Nov. 21-23 at the Ohio State Invite in Columbus, Ohio.
