Hokies back in Cassell to play host to Wake Forest

BLACKSBURG – Looking for a season sweep against the Demon Deacons, the Virginia Tech volleyball team will host Wake Forest on Sunday at noon ET at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. 

 

The Hokies (10-18, 3-12 ACC), with three home matches to close the regular season, will start off with Wake Forest (12-15, 2-14) on Sunday for the second time this season. Tech is looking for back-to-back ACC wins.

Tech defeated Wake Forest 3-2 on the road on Oct. 27 behind junior Kaity Smith's 13-kill, 12-dig double-double and freshman Logan Mosley's 27 digs. Setter Talyn Jackson added 40 assists and middle blocker Marisa Cerchio tallied 14 kills.

 

The Hokies last home win was a thrilling upset against then-No. 23 Louisville in four sets. It was Tech's first win over a ranked opponent since 2015.

 

Last time out, against Clemson, Tech took down the Tigers in five sets. Redshirt freshman Jennifer Williams notched a new career high in kills with 10, while junior Kaity Smith added her eighth double-double of the season. The Hokies tallied an ACC-high 11 aces against the Tigers with Mosley recording three of the 11. 

The Hokies have won four five-set matches this season, three of which all coming away from Cassell. 

 

Mosley inched closer to the all-time freshman dig record at Tech after she scooped up 13 digs versus Clemson, bringing her total on the season to 466. Mosley is just 16 digs shy of the record.

 

SCOUTING WAKE FOREST

- Wake Forest, before it lost to Boston College earlier this week, beat Virginia and lost to North Carolina. Wake Forest is in last place in the ACC standings with two conference wins.

- Head coach Randi Smart enters her third season at Wake Forest, but her first season as head coach, following her time at Cal State as head coach. Smart, who joined Wake Forest at the same time as Tech head coach Jill Wilson, is 0-1 in the series as the head coach.

- The Demon Deacons are led by Peyton Suess, who averages 3.22 kills per set and Madeline Holt, who ranks sixth in the conference for assists per set with a 9.71 mark.

- The Hokies lead the all-time series against Wake Forest 34-12 and look to continue their seven-match win streak that dates back to 2014.
