One of six ACC men's teams in the field, the Hokies earned an automatic bid to the Championships after finishing second at last Friday's NCAA Southeast Region meet held at Panorama Farms just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. Peter Seufer, a redshirt senior from Lynchburg, Virginia, led the way, winning the 10K race in a time of 29 minutes, 20.7 seconds – a career-best time for that distance.
Fitsum Seyoum, a redshirt junior, and senior Diego Zarate also recorded top-25 finishes at the regional meet. Seyoum came in ninth with a time of 30:06.9, while Zarate finished 22nd with a time of 30:36.9. Both Bashir Mosavel-Lo (38th) and Antonio Lopez Segura (39th) finished in the top 40.
Seufer earned all-region honors for the third time in his career and continued a great season. He won his second consecutive ACC title at the league championships held Nov. 1, and he'll be looking to add All-America honors for a second consecutive season as well. He finished 16th at last year's NCAA Championships held in Madison, Wisconsin, becoming the seventh All-American in program history.
Also, Sara Freix, a senior from Centreville, Virginia, will be competing for Tech at the 2019 NCAA Championships. She was one of 38 individuals chosen for the women's race through an at-large selection process. She finished seventh in the women's 6K race at Friday's NCAA Southeast Regional and also recorded a second-place finish at the ACC Championships on Nov. 1. She ran her regional race in a career-best time of 20:14.5.
Freix will be making her first NCAA Championships appearance and will be looking to become the fifth All-American in women's program history.
Freix will lead off the action for the Tech contingent. The women's 6K race starts at 11:15 a.m. EST, followed by the men's 10K race at 12:15 p.m. EST.
