Hokies sign nation’s No. 4, No. 44 for 2020

BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech men's tennis head coach Jim Thompson announces the signing of two to the 2020 class. Matthis Ross, ranked 44th nationally will join the Hokies for the 2020 spring season, while Ryan Fishback, tabbed 4th nationally is set to join Tech in the fall.

Prior to Virginia Tech: Recognized as five-star, blue-chip player by Tennis Recruiting... Ranked fourth nationally, first in Mid-Atlantic region and first in New York by Head recruiting lists… ranked as high as second nationally… USTA U18 National Indoor Champion (gold ball)... USTA U16 National Clay Court finalist (silver ball)... USTA U14 National Hard Court Doubles Champion (gold ball)... Ranked No. 1 in U16 nationally… High School All-American… also competed in soccer. 

Personal: Member and President of the National Honor Society… served as sophomore class president… son of Chip and Dawn Fishback… father competed in tennis, football and baseball at Davidson College, coaches tennis at Hobart and William Smith Colleges… has two brothers, Drew and Tucker.

Coach Thompson: "I am so excited to have Ryan join our program at Virginia Tech.  He is exactly what we have in mind for the direction we are going with our program.   He is a great student, an amazing citizen in his community and one heck of a good tennis player.   I have known his father for many years and have enjoyed getting to know his mom and younger brothers in this process and I can tell you that the values that they have instilled in Ryan are amazing.  He will be a tremendous addition not only to our program, but to all of Virginia Tech and the surrounding community."

Personal: Son of Charles Ross and Jessica Liblanc… plans to study business management when he joins the Hokies in January.  

Coach Thompson: "We are very excited to have Matthis join our program. He comes from the world-renowned Sanchez Academy in Florida and has worked very closely with Emilio Sanchez Vicario and Jose Segura. Matthis brings a very big serve and good forehand to our team. We feel like he will have an immediate impact on our program starting in the spring."
