Tech men down No. 8 Ohio State, RV Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 24 Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of big wins this weekend as the Hokies downed No. 8 Ohio State 185-168 as well as RV Penn State, 205.5-145.5.
 
Tech's women faltered to both, falling to No. 24 Ohio State, 247-106 and Penn State, 216.5-136.5.
 


 
HOKIES MEN
The men opened the second session with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Sam Tornqvist, Simon Shi, Blake Manoff and Thomas Hallock posted a time of 1:28.87.
 
In the 500 free, Lane Stone turned in a third place 4:29. Stone went on to claim the title in the 200 freestyle later in the meet as he posted a time of 1:37.92. Hallock added a third-place 20.35 in the 50 free.
 
Tornqvist turned in his second win of the weekend as he claimed the top spot in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.66. Dylan Eichberg placed third in the 200 IM with a 1:51.05.
 
Manoff also posted his second win of the weekend on Saturday as he took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.13 to set a new McCoy Natatorium record. His teammate Antani Ivanov took third with 48.57.
 
The Hokies' Noah Zawadzki claimed third in the 3-meter with a score of 353.15.
 
Tech wrapped up the session with a second place-finish in the 400 free relay off swims from Manoff, Hallock, Henry Claesson and Stone with a time of 2:58.52.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Tech's women started the session in the 400 medley relay, placing fourth in the field with a 3:45.02 from Margarita Ryan, Joelle Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Sarah Shackelford.
 
Loulou Vos put in a fifth-place time in the 1000 free, swimming a 10:14.94 for the Hokies. Following her was Anna Landon in the 50 free, notching a fourth-place finish with a time of 23.74.
 
Ryan continued her strong start to the season as she finished third in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:00.48. Freshman Jenna Thompson came in fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:03.16 for Tech.
 
Another freshman off to a solid start this season, Rose Pouch turned in a fourth-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.77. In the 100 fly, Kayla Purcell swam a 55.84 to place fourth in the event.
The Hokies had a solid performance in diving today with Teagan Moravek claiming the top spot in 1-meter with a score of 286.70. Regan Westwood finished third for the Hokies with 260.40.
 
Tech wrapped up the day finishing third in the 200 free relay with a 1:33.08 from Vereb, Landon, Shackelford and Abigail Andrusin.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –
The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the first session of competition on Friday evening against Penn State and Ohio State in University Park, Pennsylvania.
 



HOKIES MEN
The Tech men started off the session with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Sam Tornqvist, Simon Shi, Blake Manoff and Thomas Hallock put up a time of 3:15.61. The Hokies finished over a second faster than the quartet from Penn State.
 
Tech followed up with a two, three finish in the 1000 freestyle behind Filippo Dal Maso's 9:23.08. Lane Stone came in third with a time of 9:24.58. Dal Maso claimed another second-place finish later in the meet, turning in a 3:58.09 in the 400 IM.
 
Antani Ivanov led the Hokies in the 200 fly with a time of 1:45.97 and was followed by freshman Ryan Vipavetz with a second place time of 1:49.37. Another freshman claimed a top-three finish as AJ Pouch took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.65) with senior Simon Shi coming in third (2:01.87).
 
Manoff took the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a 44.38 while Sam Tornqvist nabbed first in the 100 backstroke, 49.02.
 
The Hokies wrapped up the session with the top finish in the 200 free relay behind Manoff, Hallock, Henry Claesson and Alex Hines with a time of 1:21.03.

HOKIES WOMEN
Tech finished just outside the top-three in the opening relay event as Margarita Ryan, Joelle Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Anna Landon tallied a fourth place 1:42.13.
 
Loulou Vos got the Hokies going with a first place finish in the 500 freestyle, turning in a time 4:52.87.
 
Joelle Vereb gave the Hokies a top finish in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 50.32. She was followed by Abigail Andrusin with a second-place time of 50.36. In the 200 IM, freshman Rose Pouch finished fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.41.
 
Ryan took first in the 100 back with a time of 55.20.
 
The Tech women wrapped up the session with a second place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:23.58 off swims from Vereb, Sarah Shackelford, Larson and Vos.
 
Virginia Tech will be back in the pool tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the second session of the competition.
