PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Virginia Tech women's soccer team got an early goal from Emmalee McCarter and held the Pitt Panthers in check for 90 minutes to claim a 1-0 victory in ACC action at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Thursday night in the Hokies' final regular-season match of 2019.
With the win, coupled with the rest of the ACC results from Thursday, the Hokies (12-4-2, 4-4-2 ACC) finished the season tied for eighth, but due to a tiebreaker with Notre Dame, will not advance to the upcoming ACC Championship tournament.
It didn't take long for Tech to get on the board as McCarter gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with a goal off a corner kick in the seventh minute. It was her third of the season and would hold for her first career game winner.
McCarter became the eighth Tech player this season to record a game-winning goal, which is the most for the program since the 2013 season, when eight Hokies also registered game winners.
Tech goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made two stops while registering her 10th shutout of the year and her 12th win. Individually, McGlynn is now tied for second in single-season shutouts and third in single-season wins at Tech. It was also her school record 32nd career shutout and 41st career win, second all-time.
As a team, the 10 clean sheets this year marks just the sixth time in school history a squad has reached double figures in shutouts (2011-14, 2018-19). The 10 shutouts 18 matches into a season is tied for the second-most, while the 14 goals surrendered is the third fewest at this point in a season.
Quick Notes:
- This was the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools with the Hokies now holding a 5-0-1 mark in the series.
- In games played on Halloween, Tech is now 5-2-0, but won for the first time in a road match (1-2-0) on this date.
- Jaylyn Thompson has now started 68 straight matches, the most since Kelsey Mitchell (2009-12) started all 88 games of her Tech career.
- McGlynn is now at 58 straight and Emmalee McCarter owns the third longest streak at 37.
- McGlynn has played 5,165:20 straight minutes since the last time she was substituted (Aug. 25, 2017 – 55 straight matches).
