Tech wraps up Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team wrapped up the Hokie Fall Invite today.

Senior Shene Disbergen and junior Nika Kozar started the day off with a victory in doubles, defeating the Marshall duo of Anna Smith and Dani Dankanych in a tiebreaker, 8-7(4). Freshmen Lily Hackbirth and Audrey Butterworth teamed up for their second win of the weekend, dropping Kara Joseph and Jutte van Hansewyck, 8-6.

Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin shined this weekend, not dropping any of the matches they competed in. Hackbirth and Butterworth also had impressive showings, each freshmen grabbing a singles win and two wins as double partners.

More Hokies will be in competition this week, as Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto travel to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the ITA All-American Championships.

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team took the courts again today for the second day of the Hokie Fall Invite as juniors Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin remain undefeated on the weekend. 

Freshmen Audrey Butterworth and Lily Hackbirth mounted an impressive five-game comeback in doubles action this morning to defeat their New River Valley counterparts, Radford, 8-6.

Butterworth wrapped up her morning with a decisive 6-4, 6-1 win over Cara Joseph of Marshall.

In the afternoon, Sorkin and Kozar carried their momentum from yesterday, finding success outdoors. Kozar battled back after dropping her first set and ousted Radford's Anastasia Belyaeva 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(9). Sorkin also went three sets against Radford and defeated Drousile Dzeubou 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(6).

The Hokies will wrap up the Hokie Fall Invite tomorrow, with action beginning at 8 a.m.

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team picked up several wins in singles and doubles at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center today, hosting for the first time this fall with the Hokie Fall Invite.

The Hokies started the day strong in doubles with juniors Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin defeating a pair from Appalachian State, 8-6, while senior Shene Disbergen and sophomore Annie Clark took down another set of Mountaineer with a score of 8-4.

Kozar and Sorkin continued their winning ways in the next round of doubles action against Radford, winning 8-2. Clark teamed up with Noumea Witmus of VCU to defeat a pair from Marshall with a margin of 6-0.

Moving into singles, Kozar and Clark grabbed wins in two sets, as Kozar had a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Marshall's Anna Smith and Clark notched a  6-0, 6-3 decision against the Herd's Jutte VanHansewyck. Freshman Lily Hackwirth built on the momentum of her first collegiate win the last time out, defeating her opponent from Radford in two sets.

Day one of the invitational concluded with Kozar remaining undefeated on the day with a 6-1 6-3 win over App State's Cassie McLay. 

Sorkin also went undefeated on the day in exciting fashion. She went to a 10-point tiebreak against Marshall's Daniela Dankanych, winning it 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(7). She followed up with another tiebreak against Appalachian State's Teodora Sevo, coming from behind to win it 0-6, 6-4, 1-0(10).

The Hokies will return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. with doubles.
