BLACKSBURG – Maroon rolled to a 23-11 victory over Orange at the 2019 Intrasquad Wrestleoff in Cassell Coliseum Friday night.
The exhibition dual signals the start of the regular season for the Hokies. Maroon won six of the nine matches that counted toward its team score, including tech falls from Mitch Moore and John Borst.
The Hokies return to action Saturday, Nov. 2 against eighth-ranked Missouri in Cassell Coliseum. Mat-side seats are still available for this match and can be purchased here.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- No. 17 Mitch Moore got the first win of the night for Maroon by tech fall over Dom Latona. Moore had three takedowns and two near falls in the match.
- John Borst also won by tech fall, defeating Jarrett Tronge. Borst had four takedowns and two near falls to end the match early.
- No. 4 David McFadden won by major decision over Jordan Florence 25-11. In what ended up as the highest-scoring match of the night, McFadden had 11 takedowns to secure the win.
- No. 14 Collin Gerardi beat Cole Rhone by major decision 12-4 in the second match of the night. Gerardi had four takedowns and a near fall.
- Cody Hughes also won by major decision over Kolton Clark 12-3. Hughes had five takedowns in the match.
- Freshman Connor Brady defeated No. 23 B.C. LaPrade 7-4 in a match that was tied 2-2 entering the third period. Brady had two third-period takedowns to pull the upset.
