Tech continues success in fall exhibition games

BLACKSBURG – In its second exhibition of the 2019 fall season, the Virginia Tech baseball team defeated the Florence-Darlington Technical College Friday evening at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park as 13 Hokies have at least one hit in the 15-2 victory.
 
Tech jumped out to a seven-run lead after three frames and put the game away in the seventh with a six-run frame.
 
Brennan Reback, who scored four times for the Hokies on Monday, led the team with three RBI on the night and crossed the plate twice. Kevin Madden was the only other Hokie with a multi-RBI night, driving in two.
 
Cade Hunter led five Tech players with multi-hit nights, as he had three hits including a double. Xander Hamilton (double), Carson Jones, Fritz Genther and Madden each had two hits, while Genther and Seagears each scored two runs.
 
Gavin Cross (triple) and Tanner Thomas (double) were the only other Hokies with an extra-base hit.
 
On the mound, Chris Gerard got the start and struck out the side, while Nolan Wilson also had three strikeouts in his appearance out of the bullpen. Anthony Simonelli (2.0 innings), Peyton Alford (1.1) and Stephen Restuccio (1.0) each struck out two in their time on the mound.

Tech's Fall World Series opens Monday, Oct. 21 with Game 1, while Game 2 is set for Wednesday, and the Hokies face Louisburg College on Friday, a 4 p.m. start. All games in the series will be contested at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
