Hokies wrap up ITA Atlantic Region Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region men's tennis championships in Charlottesville, Virginia.
 
Henrik Korsgaard battled against William & Mary's Sebastian Quiros in the Round of 32 singles on Saturday. The Tech senior won the first set in a tiebreak, outlasting Quiros 7-6(3). The Tribe player responded, coming back to win the second, 6-3. In the final set, the two again went to a breaker, but Quiros held on to take it 7-6(4).
 
Freshman Michael Shepheard and sophomore Brandon Perez also went to three-sets. Shepheard squared off against UVA's William Woodall. The Cavaliers player won the first set 6-4, but Shepheard rallied to win the second in a breaker 7-6(4). In the final set, Woodall secured it 6-4.
 
Perez won the first set 7-5 over UVA's Ammar Alhaqbani. The host team's Alhaqbani responded to take the next two for the win 6-3, 6-2.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
The Virginia Tech men's tennis team advanced on Friday at the 2019 ITA Atlantic Region Championships with three Hokies moving on in singles as well as Henrik Korsgaard and Brandon Perez in doubles.
 
Freshman Michael Shepheard knocked off Howard's Roger Lyn in the first match. Shepheard dropped the first match 6-4, but responded to win the next two by the same margin.
 
Brandon Perez added a singles win for the Hokies, falling in a close first set 7-6(5) to St. Joe's Nickolas Frisk. The Tech sophomore powered back to win the next two in decisive fashion, taking the match 6-0, 6-1.
 
Senior Henrik Korsgaard downed George Mason's Jakob Nielson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
 
In doubles, Korsgaard and Perez paired up for an 8-1 win over Navy's Romesh Kahatapitiya and Gavin Segraves. The Hokies' duo picked up another win as they knocked off Chen Ruo and Daniel Pellerito of William & Mary, 8-5
 
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday for two rounds of singles (32 & 16) and one round of doubles (16) beginning at 9 a.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
The Virginia Tech men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of competition on Thursday at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships in Charlottesville, Virginia.
 
Only three Hokies were on the court during the opening day. Henrik Korsgaard, Brandon Perez and Michael Shepheard all earned double byes in the event.
 
Ryan Kros won his first-round match, defeating Hampton's Fayzullokhon Mavlyudov in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-3. In the second match of the day, Kros fell to Nihit Rawal of Morgan State, 7-5, 6-0.
 
Tech's Chase Bernstine fell in his first round 6-3, 6-2 to Morgan State's Sebastian Lopez. The Hokie junior came back in the consolation match to defeat St. Joe's John Massart 6-2, 6-2.
 
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Friday with three more Hokies getting into the singles competition. In addition, all six Hokies will take to the court for the first time in doubles.
 
Matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. with singles followed by two rounds of doubles.
