Mekhi Lewis, Ty Walz set to compete at 2019 Continental Cup

BLACKSBURG - Two members of the Virginia Tech wrestling program will kick off their 2019-20 freestyle campaign this weekend, as Mekhi Lewis and Ty Walz compete in the 2019 Continental Cup in Khasavjurt, Russia.

Lewis is using his Olympic redshirt this season to focus on making the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team. The 2019 NCAA Champion is wrestling in the 74 kg weight class in Russia, a similar class to the 165 pounds he wrestled for Tech last season. Lewis won gold at the 2018 World Junior Championships in Slovakia.

Walz is in his third season on the Hokies' wrestling staff after he was a three-time All-American at Tech from 2015-17. Walz won the 2017 ACC Championship at the heavyweight division, then won a bronze medal at the 2017 U23 World Championships. Walz is set to wrestle at the 97 kg class at the Continental Cup.

Both Hokies will start the competition early on Friday morning with both the 74 and 97 kg qualification rounds beginning at 4 a.m. EST. Updates on the matches will be posted on the official Hokies Wrestling Twitter account. The semifinals for both classes are scheduled for 11 a.m.

The repechage and finals are scheduled for Saturday morning.
