Hokies fall to Tar Heels 81-69 Thursday night

BLACKSBURG – Dara Mabrey opened the game with Tech's first 8 points, and went on to knock down five triples on the night and Taylor Emery scored the 1,000thpoint of her career Thursday, but it was not enough to overcome North Carolina Thursday night. The loss drops the Hokies to 13-6 and 0-6 in league play.

Emery reached 1,000 career points in the first quarter on a pull up jumper in the lane. She became the fastest player to ever reach that mark, scoring 1,000 in just 55 games, shattering Tere Williams' program record of 71.

Emery, who hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half to give the Hokies a 10-point advantage would finish the game with 17 points.

After a back and forth first half, Tech went on a spurt to widen the margin, culminating in Emery's shot at the buzzer giving them their largest lead of the game. However, it was the Heels (11-9, 2-4) that came out of the intermission more aggressive, starting the third period on a 9-1 run to close the gap and later scoring 10 straight points giving themselves a 5-point advantage.
