BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Athletics is pleased to announce its spring live event/broadcast matrix on Wednesday, which includes a combined 57 games at Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility, English Field at Union Park, Tech Softball Park and Thompson Field.
It represents the most coverage in the history of Tech's baseball, lacrosse and softball programs in a single season. All of the contests will be accessible on ACC Network Extra and the WatchESPN app.
Tech's baseball game against Boston College on Monday, May 5 will be on ESPNU, the lone linear broadcast.
Jon Laaser and former pitcher for the Hokies Andrew Wells will be the primary talent for baseball's broadcast. Both return to the booth after calling games the previous seasons.
Laaser has plenty of baseball experience, working for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, a Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves at the time. Wells, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, played for the Hokies from 2003-08 and racked up 133 strikeouts in 247.2 innings pitched.
Evan Hughes will be the main broadcaster for Tech's nationally-ranked lacrosse team, returning after calling two games last season. Hughes, a sophomore in the multimedia journalism program at Tech, is well-rounded from covering baseball this past summer with the St. Cloud Rox Baseball Club (Minn.) to wrestling, men's and women's basketball games at Tech this winter.
Bailey Angle and Hughes will have the main duties for softball commentary. Angle, who has been doing games for Tech softball since 2015, has also called games for the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, as well as Bluefield College and Tech volleyball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball.
