BLACKSBURG – A win by the men and a second-place finish by the women highlighted the season opener for the Virginia Tech cross country teams at the Virginia Tech Invitational held at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on Friday evening.
The Tech men finished their first meet of the season with a win, as a gaggle of Hokies finished 5-10 to pick up 30 points, while the College of Charleston (West Virginia) came in second with 44 points. On the women's side, Sarah Edwards was the first Hokie across the finish line and led a group of women that went 2-3-4, as they placed second as a team with 31 points. Wake Forest barely edged out Tech to win with 30 points.
Will Griffen was the top finisher for the men with his time of 18 minutes, 56.7 seconds and was followed closely by Osman Humeida, Peter Seufer, Matthias Cannon and Jack Joyce, as all four had an identical time of 18:57.0.
Edwards, a senior, finished second overall with her time of 13:56.1 and was quickly followed by graduate transfer Kyra Lopez with her time of 13.56.5, while Sara Freix rounded out the trio with a time of 13.57.0.
