No. 18 Tech plays host to Gardner-Webb Tuesday night

BLACKSBURG – On Tuesday, October 1 the No. 18 Virginia Tech men's soccer team will face off against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at Thompson Field in a break from ACC play.

The Hokies hope to notch another win after recording a draw and a loss in their last two matches. After falling 2–1 at Louisville, Tech drew 2–2 with a stubborn Boston College side.
 
Tech took the lead on two separate occasions with goals from Kristo Strickler in the 25th minute and Marc Hoppler later in the 56th after the Eagles had equalized. A Boston College free kick just outside the penalty area resulted in another game-tying goal in the last minute of regulation. After a scoreless overtime period, the Hokies had to settle for just one point against the Eagles.
 
The Bulldogs (4–3–1)
Gardner-Webb is undefeated in their past five matches, most recently winning 3–1 over Longwood and scoring an overtime goal at George Mason to take the victory 3–2.

Gardner-Webb won the first conference game they have played this season, topping Longwood on Saturday. The Bulldogs kept a two-goal lead throughout the game and deterred a late Longwood comeback attempt to kick off their Big South campaign with three points. Oskar Wang leads production for the Bulldogs with five goals and two assists, but Jorge Salgado (4 goal, 3 assists) is not far behind with 11 points to Wang's 12.
 
Series History
Virginia Tech has yet to lose to Gardner-Webb, leading the series with a record of 3–0–1. The last matchup came in August of 2018 after a 16-year hiatus in the series. The Hokies won the 2018 match 2–1, while the only tie in the series was a 0–0 deadlock back in 2002.

On the Horizon
The Hokies tough ACC schedule will continue as they hit the road on Saturday, October 5 to face No. 4 Clemson. After facing the Tigers, Tech will yet again play away from Thompson field when they visit Pitt on Friday, October 11.
