Tech drops second straight to a top 10 team on the road

CLEMSON, S.C. – For the second straight match, the 16th-ranked Virginia Tech women's soccer team was on the road against a top 10 opponent. The result was the same as Thursday night at No. 1 Virginia, a two-goal defeat, as the No. 9 Clemson Tigers won the ACC contest 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Riggs Field.

Clemson (8-1-1, 2-1-0 ACC), who outshot the Hokies 15-2 in the first half, opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Caroline Conti put home a rebounded shot from close range. Tech goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn saved Hal Hershfelt's strike, but Conti was in the right spot to give her team the lead.

The Tigers added their second goal in much the same way, as Maliah Morris collected her own saved shot by McGlynn and put Clemson up 2-0 in the 60th minute. Just over three minutes later, Kimber Haley made it 3-0 with a shot from 25 yards out.

Tech (9-2-0, 1-2-0 ACC) would be awarded a penalty shot with 2:07 on the clock when Jordan Hemmen was fouled in the box. Nicole Kozlova converted the attempt for her team-leading fifth goal of the season to finish off the day's scoring.

McGlynn would tie her career-high with 11 saves in the match, but it was the most for her in a 90-minute contest. Her previous high in 90 minutes was nine versus Notre Dame on Oct. 18, 2018 (a 2-1 win), while she stopped 11 shots in a 0-0 double overtime tie versus Boston College on Sept. 29, 2017.

Quick Notes:

  • This was the 16th meeting between the two schools, and it now stands at an even 6-6-4.
  • Tech is now 11-54-4 against teams ranked in the top 10.
  • As a ranked team, Tech drops to 73-28-7 under head coach Chugger Adair, and 11-24-3 versus other ranked opponents.
  • Jaylyn Thompson has now started 61 straight matches, the most since Kelsey Mitchell (2009-12) started all 88 games of her Tech career.
  • McGlynn is now at 51 straight and Hemmen 49.
  • McGlynn has played 4,496:43 straight minutes since the last time she was substituted (Aug. 25, 2017 – 48 straight matches).
