LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Michael Shepheard secured a win for the Virginia Tech men's tennis team on the final day of the Liberty Invitational.
Shepheard defeated Richmond's Matthew Fernandez in a three-set battle. After giving up the first set 6-1, Shepheard came back to win the next one by the same score. In the final set the two were close as it went into a tiebreak claimed 7-6(4) by Shepheard.
In doubles Shepheard paired up with Chase Bernstine for a 7-5 decision over Richmond's John Walsh and Josh Keitelman.
The Hokies will be back on the court next weekend at the Duke Bonk Invite and the Milwaukee Classic.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Chase Bernstine claims a pair of wins for the Virginia Tech men's tennis team during the second day of competition at the Liberty Invitational.
Chase Bernstine opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kennesaw State's Harvey Maughan. The Tech junior followed up with 7-6(2), 6-3 victory over JMU's Will Karpinski. Chase Bernstine moves into the finals of the back draw of the white flight.
Freshman Michael Shepheard faltered in his first match of the day, losing a close three-set match to Elon's Kyle Frankel 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Shepheard came back to knock off Furman's James Roelofse 6-4, 6-1.
Fellow freshman Ryan Bernstine also lost a close first match of the day against Richmond's Josh Keitelman. Ryan Bernstine picked up the first set win 6-3, but Keitelman held on to win the next two 7-5, 7-6(1). In the second match of the day, Ryan Bernstine defeated Elon's Max Zucer 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles Shepheard paired up with Chase Bernstine for a 7-6(4) decision over KSU's Gaston Muhammad and Harvey Conway in the white flight.
The Hokies will wrap up the Liberty Invite on Sunday.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Michael Shepheard advanced in the red draw on Friday during the opening day of the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Shepheard downed JMU's Alvaro Arce with straight set scores of 6-3, 6-4. Fellow freshman Ryan Bernstine teamed up with ECU's Nelson Stafford to knock off Richmond's duo of George Lovitt and Alex Wernink 6-3 in the blue doubles.
Competition will resume on Saturday with two rounds of singles and a round of doubles beginning at 9 a.m.
