N4A Release
CLEVELAND – The National Association of Academic Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) recently announced that Sarah Edwards was named student-athlete of the month for August.
In an effort to recognize and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of individuals with extraordinary stories, the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) highlights one or more student-athletes each month for their determination to achieve success regardless of personal, academic and emotional challenges.
Seven years ago, Edwards was diagnosed with Pilocytic Astrocytoma, which is a cancerous brain tumor. Though she is still living with the side effects, she did not let what happened in the past define her future. Sarah still experiences seizures that can affect her school work but through hard work and taking advantage of every resource available to her she has earned above a 3.00 semester GPA every semester she has been at Virginia Tech and has been named to the All ACC-Academic team five times.
Edwards is coming off an impressive junior campaign on the track. During the indoor season she was the ACC champion in the mile (4:41.56), was a member of the distance medley relay team that won gold (11:08.02) and earned first-team All-America honors with her sixth-place finish in the mile (4:38.68) at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In the outdoor season, she won silver in the 1,500 (4:18.91) at the ACC Championships and garnered second-team All-America honors in the 1,500 (4:18.04) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
